چکیده

The rate of biomass production is a fundamental property of all organisms in nature, but it is an especially important parameter of microbes in natural aquatic environments. An estimate of microbial production can be used as a general index of microbial activity and specifically to calculate growth rates. Since many processes scale with it, biomass production can be used to obtain a first-order estimate of rates of several processes mediated by microbes. For example, in the case of heterotrophic bacteria, the organisms to be discussed here, biomass production can be used to estimate use of dissolved organic material (DOM) if coupled with an estimate of the growth efficiency. That is, DOM uptake equals bacterial biomass production divided by the growth efficiency (expressed as a fraction, not a percentage). Biomass production is the increase in biomass per unit time per unit w)lume or per area and is a function of both biomass (B), usually expressed as carbon mass per volume (e.g. lagC l~), and the specific growth rate (i a) (e.g. h ') (Ducklow, 2000). in the absence of any mortality (grazers and viruses), bacterial biomass increases exponentially (although not necessarily very quickly) which can be described by

Estimates of bacterial growth from changes in uptake rates and biomass.

Rates of nucleic acid synthesis have been used to examine microbiol growth in natural waters. These rates are calculated from the incorporation of [3H]adenine and [3H]thymidine for RNA and DNA syntheses, respectively. Several additional biochemical parameters must be measured or taken from the literature to estimate growth rates from the incorporation of the tritiated compounds. We propose a si...

The role of the benthic bacterial community in the carbon cycle of a temperate, macrophyte-dominated oxbow was investigated in a 2-yr study from 1994 to 1996. Simultaneous incorporation of 3H-thymidine into DNA and 14C-leucine into proteins was monitored as a tool for the measurement of bacterial secondary production in the aerobic zone of the sediment along with bacterial numbers, morphotype c...

Protein content and protein synthesis rates of planktonic marine bacteria

Bacterial carbon production is an important parameter in understanding the flows of carbon and energy in aquatic ecosystems, but has been difficult to measure. Present methods are based on measuring the rate of cell production, and thus require a knowledge of cellular carbon content of the growing bacteria to convert cell production into carbon production. We have examined the possibility that ...

Empirical leucine-to-carbon conversion factors for estimating heterotrophic bacterial production: seasonality and predictability in a temperate coastal ecosystem.

Leucine-to-carbon conversion factors (CFs) are needed for converting substrate incorporation into biomass production of heterotrophic bacteria. During 2006 we performed 20 dilution experiments for determining the spatiotemporal variability of empirical CFs in temperate Atlantic coastal waters. Values (0.49 to 1.92 kg C mol Leu(-1)) showed maxima in autumn to early winter and minima in summer. S...

Studies were conducted during August and March–April in the Sargasso Sea south of Bermuda to examine rates of bacterial growth and picoplankton consumption by microbial consumers. Bacterial growth rates were estimated from [3H]thymidine (TdR) incorporation rates, while grazing rates were determined using fluorescently labeled prey (FLP). In addition, net bacterial growth rates were calculated f...
